Republicans are scrambling to for their lives torn between supporting the immensely unpopular Iraq War and an even less popular President. Their latest strategy is to block the Senate vote that is about to take place that calls for rejection of troop escalation. Blocking this vote will allow them save face by not voting and not embarrass Bush. Ultimately, the Republicans (and Lieberman) cannot hide from this dastardly act. Frankly, I'm glad they are in this pinch because those that are up for reelection in 2008 will have to answer for their actions (or inactions). For some reason, the Republicans still fear the power of the Bush administration. The outspoken critic of the Iraq War Chuck Hagel (R-NE) has moved past the Bush Administration's stranglehold and taken a bold stance against a majority of his party; and John Warner (R-VA) does his own thing. There are a few others supporting these resolutions, such as Susan Collins (R-ME), who is vulnerable in the Blue State of Maine. In the past, many that have opposed this President have paid a political price, and I think there is that fear among Republicans. I guess we shall see in 2008 whether or not it was a liability to show steadfast support for Bush. For the good of the Republic (and possibly their political futures), the best bet for Republicans is to take a stand on this war. Either you support it and you are beholden to the Bush Administration, or you support the will of the American people, which is to end this futile war.
