It's no fun being an illegal alien

The governor of New York wants driver's licenses for illegal aliens. I'm sorry, but that's a STUPID idea. Hillary wanting to have it both ways gave a half-assed endorsement of this policy. On Bill Press this morning, he said that illegal immigrants should be granted driver's licenses so they can get insurance. What a knee-jerk liberal! That is the most inane thing I have heard. Illegal immigrants are not going to get insurance. Even if they did, do you think there is an insurance company that will insure them? If the government wants to catch illegal immigrants, all they have to do is go through the insurance companies. That defeats the whole purpose of the illegal immigrant. They don't want to be documented. They don't want to pay taxes. They want to work for cash.

Meanwhile, companies continue to employ illegal immigrants, and who pays the price? The middle class. In this country, we have a minimum wage. Whether or not these immigrants are taking jobs that other Americans don't want (as George Bush says) is not the point. If you are employed in this country, and you don't work for tips or commission, you are entitled to earn minimum wage.

Here is how you solve the illegal immigrant issue. First of all, you pay them minimum wage on an official paycheck with taxes deducted. Secondly, the government should grant them a 1 year temporary visa, whereby, they can either reapply or their employer can sponsor their resident alien petition. After a year, if their visa is not renewed or they do not apply for citizenship, they go back to their country of origin. Finally, businesses must be penalized severely for hiring illegals and paying them below the minimum wage. A few things will happen, if penalties are severe enough, companies will stop hiring them. Also, if you pay minimum wage for shoveling shit, then other Americans will want to do that job. Illegals may still come here, but there will be no jobs for them so they will have no choice but to leave.

What do you do with the 12+ million that are already here, many of whom may be unwilling to come out and take an official check or follow procedure?

There is no incentive for illegal aliens to follow procedure, nor can one be created without enraging millions of Americans. The "well what do you want to do with the 12M that are already here" argument doesn't fly with me. The incentive is for the companies to follow the law instead of hiring these people. Either the 12M aliens come out and be accounted for or they don't. They're coming here for work. If there are no work options for them, then they will leave. If they are caught and they have no legal right to be here, then they are doported. I am not suggesting a witch hunt or a round up. We give them one year to become legal or go home. If it is truly the case that Americans don't want to do those jobs, then maybe visa should be granted for dishwashing and shit shoveling.

It wasn't an argument...it was a real question. Again, a real question...is the only reason people would come is work, or are many motivated to come and stay because of the healthcare, educational opportunities for their kids, and other benefits that we give? Should we withhold those benefits to illegals?

The reality is they wouln't come here if there wasn't work. If there was 0 unemployment, then I could see issuing 12M visa. They shouldn't be getting education, healthcare, etc. without paying taxes so yes we should withhold those. I'd rather see SCHIP extended.
